LOL @ Rossi. Barely makes the top 5......
John Surtees, in the category of roadracing.
As much as I love Neil (I even have him as my avatar), he is nowhere near the GOAT as far as overall drumming goes. He's pretty close to the top as a ROCK drummer (after Bonham and Danny Carey in my book), but rock drummers aren't even in the same league as jazz drummers. In Peart's own words (when talking to Peter Erskine who he had hired as a drumming teacher) : "I'm a butcher, you're a surgeon." And he was absolutely right. At this moment in time, the best drummer on the planet is Larnell Lewis, who is known for his work with jazz orchestra Snarky Puppy. This guy is on another goddamn planet.
He had a good teacher
I intentionally didn't list any musicians before as it's just too subjective and I think you'd be lucky to find any one musician or band than even 5% of the population would vote for. But I'll add that Danny Carey is an absolute machine and if I were to vote for GOAT drummer, he gets mine.
I pretty well agree with every single point in here.
(i would call it a fun coincidence that i just watched the VicFirth Pneuma video, but it's not. i watch it all the time )
"You want me on that wall"
"You need me on that wall"
I was just speaking of Rock Drummers category for Neil.
It can even be fun to compare different drummers with different styles for the same band. I somewhat prefer Deen Castronovo over Steve Smith, who has his own Jazz group, for live drumming with Journey even though "technically" Steve is the better drummer. Deen's singing ability is part of that, but not all of it. It even depends on the song. For most of the hard hitting rockers, Deen wins. Steve is better for most the ballads but when it comes time for the drum solo, there is only one choice: Steve.
Little Stevie Winwood
Anthony Gobert. Duh.
Front man...Freddie Mercury..
Yzerman is my #1 all-around favorite (MI kid) and I loved Messier for most of the same reasons - single team, long-time captain, tons of offense by playing D first.
Honorable mentions that could have been runaway GOAT if not for injury/health
- Bo Jackson
- Mario Lemieux
And he had the common sense to not let Detroit turn him into a 40 year old vegetable and retired.
Is he Larry's brother?
